Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside France's air force in a joint strike against an underground arms cache in Syrian territory used by the Daesh militant organization, as stated by the UK's MoD.

The site, pinpointed through intelligence, was assessed as containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was located in hills just to the north of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our aircraft employed Paveway IV guided bombs to target a series of entry passages leading to the depot... preliminary assessments suggest the strike was effective," officials stated.

There was no indication of any civilian impact in the strike on Saturday evening and each participating jet returned to base without incident, the MoD added.

The British jets were backed up by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

The Islamic State group - referred to as ISIS - imposed extremist governance over large swathes of Iraq and Syria before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This operation demonstrates British leadership, and determination to work closely with our partners, to stamp out any re-emergence of the terrorist group and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the area," Britain's Defence Chief the minister remarked.

RAF aircraft have carried out surveillance missions over Syria to "prevent any attempted comeback" of the group following its military defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I want to thank the personnel of our armed forces participating in this mission for their expertise and their valour," Healey added. "They were part of thousands of UK service members stationed over Christmas and New Year. This mission, to remove dangerous terrorists who endanger our security, demonstrates how British military are ready to step up, continuously, keeping Britain secure within its borders and influential overseas."

During December, the US military executed what it described as a "large-scale strike" against IS targets in Syria, after an assault claimed the lives of two US servicemembers and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The UN says IS still boasts between 5,000 and 7,000 militants in both countries.
